Why many IVF patients face implantation failure?
Infertility among young couples in the metropolitan cities is on the rise. A large percentage of the younger generation are finding it increasingly difficult to conceive naturally without medical intervention. Some couples try for years at a stretch before they realise that there could be a problem.
In Vitro Fertilisation is a term that most people are now quite well aware of. The general awareness is that it is related to fertility and helps childless couples have children. This information is sufficient to give people hope for parenthood.
Couples who are eager to have a baby visit a fertility clinic with the hope of a miraculous solution. In most cases that is what they do get in the end. However, it is a long treatment and the final procedure may not always be successful.
The IVF procedure involves multiple steps. Once the mature eggs and the sperm are ready, they are fertilised in the lab by a skilled embryologist. Usually 2-4 eggs are fertilised. From among those eggs that have been successfully fertilised the embryologist selects the healthiest one for transfer to the uterus.
Factors important for a successful embryo transfer are
Embryo quality: A healthy egg and healthy sperm result in a healthy embryo. There are times when the quality of either the sperm or the egg or both may not be very good. The success probability of an embryo that is not of the optimal quality is considerably reduced and could result in implantation failure.
Receptive uterus: It is important for the environment of the uterus to be receptive. A uterus with a poor quality environment will probably not have a successful implantation outcome.
Implantation failure has little to do with the IVF procedure itself and more with the receptive environment of the uterus. If the uterus is healthy the probability of success is higher.
Many embryo die within 5 days of transfer. This is also called embryo arrest. It is due to a weakness with the embryo itself and has nothing to do with the uterus. However age is a major factor that affects embryo arrest.
IVF failure during the first few cycles is normal. As per statistic the success rate of IVF during the first cycle is 33%. So if your first cycle fails it is not reasonable to give up hope and call it quits. Patients are recommended to try at least 3 times for a 70% success chance.
Why do many IVF patients face implantation failure?
There are a number of reasons for this. To start with a couple must ensure that they are getting their treatment from a proper renowned and reputed IVF hospital. A large percentage of the IVF failure is due to couples wanting to save money and getting their treatment done from small ill equipped clinics with a lack of proper facilities. Many of these small clinics mislead patients and perform a poor quality job leading to failure of the procedure.
There are many reputed fertility clinics and hospital with state of the art facilities. They may charge a little more for the IVF treatment but they have a high success rate and operatewith the latest techniques for IVF. Having a skilled doctor performthe embryo transfer procedure is very important for a successful IVF.
Other causes of implantation failure are associated with improper post IVF care. Many patients do not take the necessary precautions after the IVF procedure has been performed. Taking care not to indulge in strenuous activity, following a strict healthy diet, avoiding certain restricted foods as well as alcohol and smoking are important for successful implantation and also for proper foetal development and for your overall pregnancy.
In some cases a patient’s lack of compliance is the reason for IVF implantation failure. Hence it is imperative that patients adhere to the doctors instructions.
