What is Surrogacy?

A surrogacy arrangement is an agreement between the intended parents and a woman who acts as a surrogate mother, or gestational carrier, in which the surrogate mother carries the pregnancy and delivers the baby for the intended parents. In gestational surrogacy, the embryo created by in vitro fertilisation is transferred to the uterus of the surrogate mother, resulting in pregnancy. In India, surrogacy is allowed only for Indians residing in India. In India, surrogate mothers will be recruited by the intended parents directly or through ART Banks.

Who Opts for Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is required for women who have medical problems that leave her unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy. Women or couples who choose surrogacy often do so because they are unable to conceive due to a missing or abnormal uterus, have experienced multiple pregnancy losses, or have had multiple IVF attempts that have failed. Cervical incompetence, a fibroidal uterus, and intrauterine adhesions are also the reasons which may necessitate surrogacy for childbirth.
