Fertility Preservation

Some couples choose to delay parenting so they can focus on their careers and gain financial security before starting a family. Fertility preservation is the preservation of the eggs and/or sperm for use at a later date. The process also enables the preservation of eggs or sperm before the female or male starts a medical treatment that could have a negative impact on their eggs or sperm, such as cancer treatment. Those who experience certain autoimmune disorders may also benefit from fertility preservation techniques.

We can divide fertility preservation into two types:

1.
Therapeutic Freezing:

used in cases of autoimmune disorders or to preserve fertility prior to initiating medical treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

2.
Social Freezing:

used when a couple wants to delay starting a family for the sake of their careers or to establish financial security.

Fertility declines drastically with age. Also, as one advances in age, health problems can set in that can have an impact on fertility. Cryopreservation (freezing) of eggs and sperm offer solutions to these problems.

Egg freezing

In this technique, the eggs of a woman are retrieved when the quality and quantity of her eggs are at their best. After retrieval, the eggs are frozen. Advanced technologies enable us to preserve the viability of the eggs for years.

Step 1Appointment with Specialist

The patients visit the clinic for a consultation with a fertility specialist and an embryologist. A set of medical tests are performed to determine the fertility status of the woman.

IUI Process - Initial Consultation
IUI Process - Monitoring of Follicles

Step 2Preparation

Patients are provided with medications that aim to enhance hormonal stimulation, which in turn, increases the number of matured eggs available for preservation.

IUI Process - Monitoring of Follicles

Step 3Egg Collection

The eggs are extracted through an egg-retrieval process – a painless day care procedure that is performed under sedation.

Step 4Egg Freezing

The retrieved eggs are then frozen by using a vitrification procedure. Usually, the eggs are frozen for one year. However, the duration can be extended with the consent of couple.

Sperm freezing

Sperm Freezing can be beneficial for men who experience a deteriorating quantity and quality of sperms. It can also offer a solution for men who need to undergo major surgeries for other medical reasons. Sperm are provided by or extracted from the male partner and the healthiest sperm among them are preserved.

Step 1Appointment with a Specialist

The patients visit the clinic for a consultation with a fertility specialist and an embryologist. A host of medical tests are performed to determine the sperm count, along with their quality and motility.

Step 2Preparation

The patient may be provided medication that enhances hormonal stimulation, which increases the number of healthy sperm.

Step 3Sperm Collection

The male partner provides a sperm sample on the stipulated day. In some cases, the sperm may need to be extracted from the testicle. Semen can also be provided on multiple occasions to increase the number of batches of sperm in storage.

Embryo freezing

Embryos are the cornerstone of the pregnancy process. Embryos are frozen so they can be used at a later stage. The difference between the cryopreservation of eggs and sperm and the cryopreservation of embryos is that in the case of embryos, fertilisation has already taken place.

Step 1Appointment with Specialist

The patients visit the clinic for a consultation with a fertility specialist and an embryologist. A host of medical tests are performed to determine the status of sperm (in the male partner) and eggs (in the female partner), along with their quality and motility.

Step 2Preparation

Patients are provided with medications that enhance hormonal stimulation, which increases the number of healthy sperm (in male partners) and eggs (in female partners).

Step 3Sperm and Egg Collection

The male partner provides the clinic with a semen sample and the female partner undergoes egg retrieval in an operating theatre under sedation. The egg retrieval process collects the eggs, which will be fertilized in an advanced ART laboratory.
